The Dempsey Challenge is an inspirational and energetic weekend filled with fun, celebration and camaraderie. Thank you for your commitment to making life better for people managing the impact by cancer.

Packet Pickup

Packet Pickup begins Friday afternoon in Simard-Payne Memorial Park, Lewiston. We encourage you to pickup on Friday evening to avoid long wait times on event day.

In order to receive your packet, your fundraising minimum must be met. If you have not met your minimum by the time you pick up your packet, you can pay the balance by check, cash, or credit card in order to receive your participation bib.

Team Packet Pickup

Team Packet Pickup is a complementary service we provide for teams of 10 people or more. This allows one person to pick up packets for the entire team. There is no obligation to participate in Team Packet Pickup; it is offered for your convenience. You and your teammates may pick up your packets individually at any time during Packet Pickup/Registration hours in the park!

Event Day Registration

New registrations will be accepted at Packet Pickup/Registration provided the entry fee and fundraising minimum are paid onsite. To avoid a long wait at event day registration, we suggest registering online via your mobile device before you arrive at the Registration Tent. You’ll then be informed where to receive your bib.

BAG + BIKE VALET

Free bag and bike valet will be available on both Saturday and Sunday. Drop off your bag, bike, keys, and whatever other items you’d like stored while you’re out on course or in the park. The tent is located near the finish line. 

STAGING + START LINE

The start chute is located on Canal Street, just outside the park entrance. For traffic flow and safety reasons, please enter the correct staging area for your event. Patrick Dempsey is usually on the start stage to kick-off both events on Saturday and Sunday to get you pumped up!

  • Run/Walk: The 10K will stage in the front while the 5K will stage in the rear. There will be signage to help direct you. Walkers should always stage behind runners. Anyone with a stroller, wheelchair, or walker should stage at the back of the line.
    • 7:30am 10K Start
    • 8:00am 5K Start
  • Ride: The 100-mile ride will stage in front, followed by 65-,50-,25- and 10-mile novice/family ride in the rear. There will be signage to help direct you.
    • 7:30am 100-Mile Start; groups released in 10 minute waves

FOOD + BEVERAGE

5K/10K Cafe and Lobster Trap
Every Dempsey Challenge participant gets a meal with their registration. Run/Walk participants get entry into the 5K/10K Café on Saturday morning and cyclists get entry into the Lobster Trap on Sunday.

Additional food tickets to either the 5K/10K Café or Lobster Trap may be purchased online ahead of time, and will be waiting for you in the Registration Tent. A limited number of tickets are available at the event. Check in at the entrance to the Food + Beverage Tent for availability.

  • 5K/10K Café (Saturday) $10/ticket: includes omelet bar, assorted baked goods, fruit, and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Lobster Trap (Sunday) $20/ticket: includes (1) lobster, corn on the cob, potatoes, blueberry crisp, ice cream, and non-alcoholic beverages

PURCHASE ADDITIONAL FOOD TICKETS

Maine Craft Beer, Wine + Cider

Food + Beverage Tent is where you’ll find the Maine Craft Beer, Wine + Cider area, featuring local brews and hard ciders, wine and even mimosas! Every Dempsey Challenge participant receives 1 complimentary ticket (found on your bib) for an adult beverage of your choice.

Additional adult beverage tickets are available for purchase outside the Food + Beverage Tent. All proceeds from beer and wine sales support the work of the Dempsey Center!

  • Don’t Forget Your ID! All participants and spectators will be required to show a valid ID before entering this area.
Food Trucks

There will be a variety of food trucks onsite. A list of vendors coming soon.

AMANDA DEMPSEY AWARD presented by Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer®

Named in memory of Amanda Dempsey, this award is given annually to a cancer survivor who demonstrates a passion for helping others with cancer in the state of Maine. Although Amanda was reserved and humble, she had a warm presence, and was passionate about giving back to her community.

The 2020 recipient will lead the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer® Survivor Walk, along with Patrick Dempsey and his family.

Nominations for the 2020 Amanda Dempsey Award will open in late spring 2020.

The Dempsey Challenge invites survivors, caregivers, families, and those walking in honor or memory of someone to join this walk. The Survivor Walk takes place immediately following the presentation of the Amanda Dempsey Award. The walk is led by the 2020 award winner, previous winners and nomineees, and Patrick Dempsey and family.

KIDS' FUN RUN

Fun Run Start Line: 5K/10K Start Chute, Chestnut Street

 

Led by mascots like the Bates College Bobcat and Slugger the Sea Dog, the Kids’ Fun Run is an awesome way for kids ages 10 + under to participate in the Dempsey Challenge! Kids run about ¼ mile on a closed course. All littles and families are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superheros.

  • Registration is free! 
  • BONUS! Register by September 1, 2020 and receive a free Kids Fun Run t-shirt!

Day of the Event: Head to the KidZone in the park and sign in by 10:30 AM. It’s best to register in advance, but we’ll accept onsite registrations in the KidZone the morning of the event.

FESTIVAL IN THE PARK

The Dempsey Challenge offers activities and entertainment throughout the weekend, all located in Simard-Payne Memorial Park. 

Entertainment Stage

The Entertainment Stage will host a number of live bands and musical acts throughout the weekend. A complete schedule is coming soon!

Patriots Game Broadcast

On Sunday, you can watch a live broadcast of the Patriots game in the Food + Beverage Tent! Enjoy your lobster dinner and beer while watching the Pats and listening to live music. What's better than that? (If you’re a Pats fan that is!)

KidZone

The Dempsey Challenge KidZone is where kids can let loose and have fun! The KidZone features arts and crafts, healthy smoothies and cider, an obstacle course, and a reading nook. Every kiddo who participates earns a chance to win the ultimate prize – a Specialized bike and helmet!

The KidZone is FREE to all littles and their families!

Massage + Reiki

Simard-Payne Memorial Park, Massage + Reiki Tents located by the amphitheater

Volunteer massage therapists and Reiki practitioners will be providing free massage and Reiki for Challenge participants and cancer survivors on a first-come, first-served basis.

Health + Wellness Expo

You’ll find free health screenings, interactive displays on cancer risk reduction and early detection, and resource information on overall wellness from over 20 organizations.

Recyling + Composting

Help us reduce our impact on the environment by composting food scraps and recycling other materials by placing in appropriate bins. Our Green Team volunteers and partners Casella and Agri-Cycle Energy thank you in advance!
