For one weekend every September, thousands of people break out their inner athletes to raise funds to improve the lives of people living with cancer. 100% of funds raised by Dempsey Challenge participants provide programs and services AT NO COST to people impacted by cancer.

The Dempsey Challenge, presented by Amgen Oncology, is an annual run, walk, and cycle experience and is the primary fundraiser for the Dempsey Center. It is a weekend that our community eagerly anticipates and is a time of celebration and remembrance.

With the health and well-being of our community at the forefront of our concerns, we have working to #ReimaginetheChallenge. Following extensive monitoring and review of the current CDC and WHO guidelines and directives from local public safety and public health officials, we feel it is in the best interest of the Dempsey Challenge and the Dempsey Center to adjust the weekend program accordingly.  With that in mind, the run, walk, and cycle events of the Dempsey Challenge will take place virtually for 2020.

On the weekend of September 26 + 27, you will have the opportunity to participate in the #ReimaginetheChallenge virtual events wherever you are, around the world. Our virtual experience will be hosted on two world-best activity platforms, Strava and Zwift. We will support and encourage you to complete your own Dempsey Challenge, regardless of your access to technology.

The spirit of the Dempsey Challenge lives on, and we encourage you to register as a virtual Challenger, join our community in Strava, train for the Challenge with us and fundraise what you can this year to help support services for people managing the impact of cancer.

During the trying times we’re all facing, the Dempsey Center has continued to offer support to make life better for people managing the impact of cancer. We have established virtual services for cancer patients, survivors, and their families.

Now, more than ever, we need your support. Traditionally, Dempsey Challenge weekend has been a chance to engage and enlist support from friends, family, and colleagues during your fundraising outreach. While we can’t ride together, the need for donations isn’t diminished. That is why, with your help, we can push towards our ambitious fundraising target. We will reach our goal of $1.5 million raised. This allows us to continue providing free services for people managing the impact of cancer.

We understand that many of you in our community have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. That is why we’ve waived the traditional fundraising minimum, You can raise and donate as much as you can, and know that every dollar makes a difference. We have also removed the registration fee to join this year’s Challenge. Through your registration you will have access to our supportive and inclusive community, and to all the virtual events that will be hosted on September 26 + 27, 2020.

Finally, we have added new and exciting fundraising incentives and opportunities to ensure you are rewarded for your efforts.

Nobody beats cancer alone, it takes a team.

And YOU are an essential part of the Dempsey Center team.

Community celebration events may take place in Lewiston

Fortunately, there are many ways in which we will be celebrating the 12th annual Dempsey Challenge this year in our home community of Lewiston, Maine!

While practicing social distancing guidelines, the Dempsey Center will welcome our friends and supporters to visit.  At this time, it is unknown if the Dempsey Center will be ‘open’; however, our hearts and minds will be with you. We encourage you to drive by the Dempsey Center for a moment of solitude, peace and reflection as we recognize all who have been touched by cancer.

Over the years, so many wonderful Dempsey Challenge memories have been created in Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston, as well as neighboring Auburn. We encourage everyone to take some time to enjoy a stroll through the Park, or perhaps run/walk a particular distance, or jump on your bike and ride one of the many, gorgeous cycling routes. Please maintain proper social distancing, as well as safety guidelines.

Finally, at this time, we know that the many businesses and community partners in Lewiston-Auburn will miss the economic impact of the Dempsey Challenge. Each year, over 4,000+ individuals from around the country, as well as the world, descend upon our community to enjoy our restaurants, shops, and outdoor destinations. We encourage you to visit the Lewiston-Auburn area, during the fall foliage season in September, and enjoy a meal in a local restaurant or a locally brewed IPA from your favorite spot!

More information and details will be shared at a later date regarding specific events and activities that can be held safely in Lewiston, ME during Dempsey Challenge weekend. Safety is our top priority and any in-person activities will be based on guidance from State of Maine health officials.
