FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For the latest information on our health and safety plans for the in-person Local Challenge, please refer to this document.

Key Updates +

A. The answer is both! On the weekend of September 25 + 26, you will have the opportunity to participate in-person in the Local Challenge in Lewiston, Maine or virtually in the Global Challenge from wherever you are, around the world. Choose your location, your activity, your distance and set your fundraising goal. Then start training and asking friends and family to support your goal. We will come together as one unified global community in an epic live streamed celebration to celebrate $1.5 million fundraised and $1.5 million miles moved on Dempsey Challenge weekend!

Given the need for extra public health safety requirements, the in-person Local Challenge event will look a little different this year with limited capacity, services and events for participants, yet still packed with the inspiration and support you expect from the Dempsey Challenge and our community. Event and venue details will be announced at a later date.

The Dempsey Challenge team will continue to monitor the situation and Maine state guidelines; and, should circumstances warrant a change, Dempsey Challenge weekend will revert to all-virtual as it was in 2020.

A. Yes - you can always change your plans!

Many of you will have different comfort levels with participation in group activities due the COVID-19 pandemic. We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable, which is why you will be able to choose (and change) your participation for 2021. During registration, you will choose your Challenge location and confirm your plan as you get closer to event weekend. A detailed health and safety event plan based on current CDC guidelines will be provided to you to help you make your final decision about how you participate.

Please keep in mind that if you intend to participate in person for the Local Challenge, your registration and fundraising minimum must be met by September 23 so we can plan accordingly.

If you’ve already registered for the Local Challenge and have met your fundraising minimum to secure your spot by September 23 and decide you do not want to attend in person - no problem! Just complete the Challenge virtually on your own route!

To change your location, please contact [email protected].

A. Yes, a fundraising commitment of $250 is required to participate in the Dempsey Challenge, with your registration fee counting towards that total. ($250 fundraising - $50 reg fee = $200 left to hit your goal!)

Youth and young adult participants ages 23 & under receive registration and fundraising discounts as outlined below:

  • Young adults ages 18-23*: $25 registration which counts toward a $125 fundraising minimum

NEW FOR 2021:

To ensure proper planning for the number of people registered for our in-person event, participants who register for the Local Challenge (taking place in Lewiston/Auburn, Maine) will need to reserve your spot by meeting the fundraising minimum by September 23rd. If the minimum fundraising has not been met by the deadline, you forfeit your spot for the in-person Local Challenge.  We will automatically change your participation to the Global Challenge where you will be able to participate virtually.

Local Challenge participants will have the option to switch to the Global Challenge at any time, however if you wish to change from the Global Challenge to the Local Challenge, you will need to do so by September 23. Participants will be reminded several times before the September 23 deadline. At this time, we do not anticipate being able to accept any registrations for the in-person Local Dempsey Challenge after September 23. Policy subject to change.

There is no penalty if you do not hit your fundraising minimum as a Global Challenger.

A. Because of our generous sponsors, 100% of funds you raise go directly to making life better for people impacted by cancer. In 2020, Dempsey Challenge participants fundraised more than $1.2 million to provide life-changing support services for cancer patients and their families.

Every dollar you raise helps to make life better for people managing a cancer diagnosis.

A. Yes! We will have volunteer roles for our in-person Local Challenge event - although most likely limited compared to past years. We will open volunteer registration in July, along with a complete list of volunteer opportunities.

Q. What can I do to help? +

A. Register and recruit! This year, we invite you to be part of our amazing community of fundraisers while riding, walking, running — or doing an activity of your choice! Register as a Global Challenger, choose your activity and mileage, set your fundraising goal (we suggest $250) and you’re in!

Imagine if every one of our 900+ volunteers fundraised at least $250 – that would mean $225,000 raised to support the Dempsey Center's mission of making life better for people managing the impact of cancer! Together, we CAN make a difference!

A. Your donors’ gifts are already hard at work providing vital services to people impacted by cancer. At a time when social distancing is required to keep our communities safe, the Dempsey Center is now offering cancer support services virtually – through Dempsey Connects, our third, virtual center. We are currently offering support groups, counseling, nutrition and fitness consultations, and yoga, nutrition, and meditation classes.

For a complete list of services, please visit dempseycenter.org.
